On December 6, 1865, the United States of America abolished slavery with the ratification of the 13th amendment. It took a civil war to determine the fate of those who were enslaved. Since the first African slaves arrived on this continent in August of 1619, that meant that for nearly 250 years most Africans lived on these shores in a state of being legal property.
What was it like to live the life of a slave? How were these people treated? How were infractions enforced or good performance rewarded?
Come for an informative evening as Virgil Mayberry speaks on the reality of African-American slavery and how it was practiced.
