Show your love for libraries!

You have many ways to help your library continue to offer top-quality services, from short-term donations to leaving a lasting legacy to your community.

Donating funds for books or other library needs

Monetary Donations: The Library gratefully accepts donations for book memorials. To donate, please call the Business Office at 309-732-7305. The Library will acknowledge your donation with a "purchased in memory of" book plate in items purchased.

You may also choose to supplement our collection with materials in a specific subject. For details, please contact us with your interest. We will look for gaps in our collection and provide suggestions that fit your specific interest.

Donating books

You'll find used bookstore shelves at the Downtown, 30/31 and Southwest Libraries. Please note that the library may not be able to accept all donations due to space considerations. In general, we accept two boxes of donations per family, per day, in the following item types:
  • Hardback and paperback books in good condition
  • Recently published magazines
  • Select media, such as DVDs, console videogame software, and audiobooks on CD

Sorry, we cannot take -  Damaged items, textbooks of any kind, advanced reader copies, and Readers Digest Condensed Books, The Library reserves the right to recycle materials which do not meet our donation guidelines. Please remember that disposing of materials we cannot use costs us money and staff time. If excess inventory requires it, we may temporarily cease accepting material donations from time to time. For any questions about what kind of materials may be donated, please see our Donation Guidelines.

Leave a lasting legacy through the Rock Island Public Library Foundation

The Rock Island Public Library Foundation is a private 501c3 foundation set up in 1986 to support special, non-operational needs of the Rock Island Public Library with the added advantage of tax-deductibility. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, so contributions to the Foundation are the ideal way to create a lasting legacy. • Art & Drama Programs
  • Library Beautification Projects
  • Special Programs and Education
  • Adult Materials
  • Specialized Equipment and Furniture

The Foundation funds the purchase of a free book for each child attending Hug-A-Book eventsUnrestricted contributions allow the Foundation to address emerging needs of the library, putting grant dollars where they do the most good. Foundation contributions have funded subscriptions to Bookletters (a reader's recommendation service) and Ancestry.com, self-check machines, special art and drama programming, Hug-A-Book early learning programming, Children's Room redecorating, and a majority of the cost of the South entrance portico at our Main Library.
