Begin Here.

Rock Island Public Libraries & seven other Illinois Quad City-area libraries belong to the PrairieCat online catalog administered by the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS.)

Our PrairieCat membership provides our cardholders with millions of more choices, it does mean you'll need to take note of some changes.

  • We are now on the new PrairieCat catalog. You'll have access to 135 member libraries with more than 5 million items in northern Illinois. Automated catalog features that you can use to access your account are still available. Please keep in mind:
  • If you use text messaging with your library account, you'll need to opt-in again. Due to FCC regulations, we cannot automatically sign you up for text notifications.
  • If you want to keep track of your reading, you'll need to turn on the Reading History feature on your account.
  • The new automated phone renewal number will change to 1-888-542-7259 (PALZ.)
  • Your holds should transfer over to the new catalog, and you will probably find that they fill faster. If you have questions, our staff will be happy to help.
  • As you're placing holds, take note that "Rock Island Main Library" will automatically come up as the default pick-up point. If you want them sent somewhere else, use the drop-down window.

What's the reason for this change?
  • You'll have access to more items and more libraries, including other PrairieCat area library members in Andalusia, Geneseo, Colona, Orion and Cordova as well as participating schools. Illinois cardholders can use any of the 135 libraries in the PrairieCat catalog.
  • From the library side, we can rely on full-time staff support and catalog management assistance PrairieCat personnel at RAILS. This will help us stretch organizational capacity and resources.

What's new with PrairieCat?
  • As a cardholder with a PrairieCat member library, you will be able to pay fines and fees online through the My Account feature!
  • You'll also receive notices from an increased number of libraries. Notifications for overdue materials will come from the library that owns the material. Notices about holds you have waiting for you will come from the library you've designated as your pick up point. Our staff will be happy to help if you have questions.
  • You can also use NoveList Select database within PrairieCat to find reading recommendations and more options, right in the catalog!

May I return items from one library to another library?

You may return Illinois items to any Illinois Public Library. All of these libraries use the RAILS delivery network, which will return the items to the library that owns the material.

What about using a library not in PrairieCat? If you are a patron of the Davenport Public Library, good news! Davenport, and the seven Illinois Public Libraries now in PrairieCat have signed a separate, Interstate Borrowing Agreement. This special intergovernmental agreement extends walk-in borrowing privileges to Davenport patrons who want to use the seven participating Illinois public libraries, and to Illinois public library members who want to do the same.
  • Participating Interstate Agreement Libraries: Davenport Public Library - Main Street, Eastern Avenue and Fairmount Street Branches; East Moline Public Library; Moline Public Library; River Valley District Library (Port Byron and surrounding district); Robert R. Jones Public Library (Coal Valley); Rock Island Public Library - Main, 30/31 and Southwest Branches; Sherrard Public Library District; and Silvis Public Library.
  • To qualify, your card must be in good standing. To get started, validate your existing library card at the cross-state library you want to use. (Illinois patrons can go to any Davenport Public Library location to get access at all three DPL branches; Davenport patrons can go to any one of the seven Illinois library members to get access at all seven.) Validation only has to be done once.
  • Validation means the library will enter your information in their system. There's no separate card.
  • Interstate library use is on a walk-in basis only (no online holds are available.) Interstate borrowers are limited to 10 items.
  • Davenport Library items must be returned to the branch where you checked it out. Illinois library items checked out by an Interstate patron can be returned to any Illinois public library.
