Reading and Learning for Kids

Early Learning

We're ready to help create young readers with early learning programs for your child, ages birth to five!
  • Toddler Tales storytimes  are offered weekly at three locations for ages birth to five. Find one going on near you!
  • Play and Grow offers a monthly structured play group where kids three and under talk, sing, read, and play their way to early learning.
  • Hug-A-Book learning events help create young readers with four early learning activities and free books for  ages two to five. Sponsored by the Merrill Harris fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation.
  • Work with your child on skills through learning games on Early Literacy Stations or ABC Mouse at our locations, or check out preloaded learning tablets for use at home.
 

My First Library Card -

  • For ages birth through five, to develop good library habits for life!
  • Up to 10 checkouts, which includes 2 DVDS
  • Fine forgiveness for late materials

Services for School  Age Kids 

From out of school learning events to homework help, your Rock Island Library has you covered! 
  • Full access library cards, for ages six and up.
  • Homework help services include non-fiction collection, Brainfuse Help Now online tutoring, World Book encyclopedia 
  • Afterschool learning with games on our Afterschool Edge computers, monthly STEM learning activities and more.
  •  "Tween" programming for ages eight to 12. Check our calendar for what's going on. 
  • Get time on a computer in the Children's Room. PCs are for children ages 12 years and younger, and access requires a valid library card. Please note that sharing of cards or numbers is not allowed. For details, see the Library Computer and Electronic Access policy. 
  • WiFi is available at all locations, for students with their own computers.                     

Supporting Education

You are your child's first teacher! Use our discovery stations, early learning toys, puppets, puzzles, Very Ready Reader and other learning kits to work on skills at home or in our children's rooms. Ask a Children's Librarian for help.
  • Pick up a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten reading log or register and log your reading online with Beanstack, Read to your child daily to earn small rewards for reaching 100-book milestones. Consistent reading to your child builds vocabulary, develops speech skills, teaches basic reading concepts, and helps your child be ready for Kindergarten.
  • 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is available at all Rock Island Library locations. 
  • Check out a cultural pass, and do something fun together as a family.
  • Always something fun to learn at your library. See our calendar for free events, including winter and summer reading contests, Spring and Fall school break fun, movies and more.

Supporting Education

  • School outreach: Bring your class to a Rock Island Library for a special tour and program, or let us come to you! Rock Island Library staff area are available for special presentations in area preschools and K-12 classrooms.
