Going Green at your Library

The Rock Island Public Libraries are making available a whole new genre of books which reflect the ‘green revolution’ now underway in many American communities.  And just what is the ‘green revolution’ sometimes called ‘going green’?  It is for our citizens and their leaders to develop a new consciousness of how to build homes, communities, family and personal lives living in such a way as to complement the earth and its resources instead of polluting or damaging it.  It is for each of us individually or for all of us together in larger neighborhoods to use intelligently the good gifts of nature and to improve the world’s natural condition as we live on this planet, our only home.  It is to become more efficient and less wasteful in the use of our environment’s renewable and non-renewable resources.
For information about obtaining a free energy audit for your home or business (free to Iowa residents and free to Illinois residents of Rock Island, Mercer, Henry, and Whiteside Counties), Illinois homeowners can call 1-800-545-0762, small businesses or nonresidential customers can call 1-800-894-9599, or

The leaders of the City of Rock Island have made a commitment to be as green as possible in the performance of their civic responsibilities.  Their stated goal is to operate the city “in a more efficient and environmentally responsible manner.”  They have assembled a Green Team of volunteers from every city department who will be creative in thinking of ways to promote a healthier and safer city with sustainable growth.  Decisions will be made in consideration of the short- and longer- term environmental and economic costs and benefits.  To learn more about Rock Island’s ‘Green’ commitment,  Click Here

What can we do to ‘go green’?  You can start by visiting your library.  More books on ‘being green’ are arriving all the time.  They provide a wealth of practical ideas that you can use, including green travel, green buildings and lawns, renewable energy, green investing, religion and ecology, raising children to consider the environment, and much, much more.  Look for these new books in the following Dewey numbers:  333.72 and 640.  There are also other areas of the collection that are adding ‘green’ books.  All of these new ideas are free and yours to enjoy with your library card.  Here are just a few of the new titles for you to consider—
